A Repair Cafe is your answer for fixing those broken items.
It’s free, you’ll learn something, and you’ll keep your items out of the landfill.
So what’s not to like, right?
Let’s face it… it’s pretty frustrating that it’s now easier and cheaper to just go out and buy a new item than it is to repair the broken one. We’ve heard generations that have gone before us say, “They don’t make ’em the way they used to!” And well, Repair Cafes are the response to that exact comment.
Many communities in Canada are hosting frequent repair cafes to help share time, skills, and reduce the impact we have on this planet. It’s also pretty cool that if you know nothing about toasters, you can go and learn how to fix one. In the end it’s a real win-win situation. We reduce our waste and save our wallets.
Volunteers make a Repair Cafe happen!
You can be a volunteer too if you know anything about the following skills:
- sewing
- wood working
- electronics
- Computers & IT solutions
- painting or finishing
- creative skills
There is more to a repair cafe than just getting your item repaired for free. It brings communities together, it shows young people that not every solution is found in a store, it builds resiliency, and it’s a way to glean a hands-on education. If you’re curious about the two groups putting on a Repair Cafe in Kitchener Waterloo I recommend you check out Transition KW and KW Artz Lab.
Thank you for this information ! I had kept an article from the Record about the existence of a repair cafe for a long time. It was run by the Working Centre When I needed to go there (back in March ) I called but they were no longer doing it and didn’t have any idea if there was another one anywhere.
That item was thrown out but I will keep this info for next time.
That’s great Claudette, we hope you are doing well 🙂 See you at the next repair cafe!
